🇰🇪 Sweetpotato …

Target Beneficiaries : Agricultural researchers, seed producers, and development agencies in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Goals : Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of sandponics for pre-basic sweetpotato seed production.

Community impact : Successfully demonstrated sandponics as a cost-saving and efficient alternative, encouraging broader adoption for specific sweetpotato genotypes.

Description

The At the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), in collaboration with the International Potato Center (CIP), researchers compared the cost-effectiveness of using sandponics versus conventional soil substrates for multiplying pre-basic sweetpotato seed. The sandponics system showed a 21.8% higher vine multiplication rate, significantly reducing production costs by 22.7%. This study highlights the potential of sandponics as a more sustainable and cost-efficient alternative for sweetpotato seed production in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly for specific genotypes like Ejumula.
